Knock one down, set another one up

It'd be really handy if different places around the world could stop coming up with inhuman legislation, a minute after the same piece of stupid shite is defeated somewhere else. It really makes you feel like you're running just to stand still.

The Russian bill which would have made it illegal to discuss anything related to homosexuality, has been defeated, but as the folks from All Out informed me in my inbox this morning, Nigeria has now introduced their own fucking stupid anti-gay bill. From All Out;

Last week, nearly 230,000 of us went All Out for Russia - and the pressure worked. The vote on the anti-gay bill did not take place!

All Out members around the world amplified the voice of Russian activists, forcing world leaders to speak out against this law that justifies hate and discrimination.

Polina, Sasha and our other friends in Russia remain hopeful, but the fight is far from over. The bill may still come back - and if it does, we'll be ready.

The Nigerian Senate has just followed Russia's bad example, passing a bill this week which would make it illegal to publicly support LGBT rights. This Monday, our friend Ife and other Nigerian activists will march to the UN and call on the government - attending a UN meeting in New York - to abandon the legislation.

The bill would "make it a punishable offense - of up to 14-years in prison - for anybody to go to a gay bar, to work for or be involved with LGBT organizations, or to be in an openly gay relationship."
