An idea - Pub Debates

While I like sitting here, tossing out a good old rant, there's something else I think I'd like to do - a direction I could take this blog in, a step into the big old world outside.

I'd like to start a semi-regular Torrents of Scorn Pub Debate.

Now 'debate' doesn't actually convey exactly what I want, but it's close enough.

Here's an outline of what I'd like to do.
1) Pick a topical item of political debate, relevant to Australia.
2) Invite 3 people (or so) to talk for a set period on that topic (a short burst - 5-10 minutes each).
3) Each speaker gets a right of reply after everyone's said their piece (again 5-10 minutes of reply).
4) Open up questions from the audience (for however long, until we're all too pissed to form coherent sentences, or people get bored and go home).
5) We do this at a pub, so we can all have some beer while getting in boots and all into the discussion.

So, for those reading, who don't comment, this is where I need your input. Would you come along to see one of these, and even better, would you want to speak at one of these?

So far my only rules are really;
1) Keep to your time limit.
2) Don't invoke Godwin's Law or otherwise abuse your fellow speakers or the audience. By all means, rubbish their ideas, stance or theories, but try and do so by arguing some valid counterpoint.
3) If you get yellow carded or red carded for breaking 2) above, abide by the moderator's ruling.

People required for one of these to go ahead;
1) 3x speakers
2) 1x moderator
3) 1x bar runner, to fetch drinks for the thirsty speakers and moderator
4) Maaaaaybe someone to do audio and/or video
5) An audience of more than one guy and his dog

Generally, I'm thinking of it as a lowbrow suburban Q&A with beer. And no Tony Jones.

So, comments? thoughts?

    Hopefully it will be, just have to drum up some interest. That's the hard part. :)

  2. I'm happy to be roadie/bar runner.

  3. Happy to do any all, except run to the bar as it's unlikely any of the drinks would make it fully intact back to the participants

  4. The unions used to do it in the old days. But then they were movements not ALP apparatchik clubs.

    It would be good to see a return to the union-as-movement days. I can't help but think that you're right about the state of unions today.
