Torture for votes - the shameless John Howard

Former PM John Howard, it seems, got David Hicks charged by the US to help his re-election campaign. Say what you like about David Hicks himself, but no-one can deny the way his case was handled was an insult to a country that is supposed to be under the rule of law and democracy. 

Now it emerges, not only was his case a legal travesty, it was a shameless bid for popularity by Australia's most cravenly right wing Prime Minister.
