And in another round of America's warfare on freedom by Christian Republicans, Mississippi (hope I spelled that right, it always stumps me) is introducing a bill that would define legal personhood as starting at the moment of fertilisation, essentially redefining any kind of abortion, for whatever reasons as premeditated murder. Oh shit yeah, that's some scary crap right there. Check it out here.
After the jump, some comments from America's Progressive Voice (on Facebook) on Miss' madness.
UPDATE: (via APV): PERSONHOOD AMENDMENT GOES DOWN!!!!!!!!!
I will add my own personal "AWWWW YEAH!"
More here
From America's Progressive Voice
Terri Belda:
"Women need to get out of Miss.. their rights are getting taken away... Run ladies run..."
Who is Against Mississippi's Initiative 26:
Mississippi State Medical Association, Mississippi Nurses Association, American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of MS, Mississippians for Healthy Families, RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association, Parents Against MS 26 / Parents Against Personhood, Planned Parenthood, The Stem Cell Action Coalition, Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, Mississippi Coalition for Citizens with Disabilities, National Advocates for Pregnant Women
Why:
Mississippi is one of the state's with the highest rates of teen pregnancies and infant mortality, the amendment does nothing to prevent unintended pregnancy or reduce the need for abortion.
The common procedures we use now could be interpreted as murder or wrongful death if Proposal 26 passes.
This justifiably will limit the physician's options and deter use of common lifesaving procedures.
It undermines access to safe and reliable infertility medical treatments
Medicine defines a pregnancy as an implanted egg.
If a fertilized egg in a petri dish were to be defined as a person by passage of the Personhood Amendment, it is very likely that IVF would no longer be an option in Mississippi.
