These two links, here and here, about a gay couple's violent harassment by Cleveland police, has got me thinking. The various threads of protest, mostly to do with Occupy in the US has highlighted an increasing militarisation, and an increasing extra-legal use of brutal violence. One could argue that this is a response to Occupy itself. Situations like the above make me wonder however. Is it possible that overly militarised police forces, grown inured to the use of over the top equipment and inculcated into a culture where brutality is the norm, now just respond with harsh brutality to anything that comes along?
Maybe.
