Passage of the Carbon Tax and Liberal tantrums

The Carbon Tax bills have passed. The Liberal Party, of course, have thrown a tanty that would do any red cordial-hyped toddler proud.

"This is the biggest betrayal since (insert insanely disproportionate rhetoric here)" they cry!

For a glimpse of how seriously the world is taking them check out the Twitter hashtag #BiggestBetrayal. My favourite I think so far is '#BiggestBetrayal since Cardassians turned out to be different from Kardashians'.

Liberal MP Andrew Nikolic has a go here sticking fervently to the betrayal meme. He also fails to spell colleague correctly and drops a bit of a whopper of a fib at the end;

On the Government’s own figures, three million Australian households will be worse off under the Carbon Tax.  This means that the poorest people in our community, who spend a bigger percentage of their income on power, will feel the Carbon Tax most.
As I've discussed before here, the Government's numbers have turned out to be a little conservative. Low income earners are to be a little better off, while the richest Australians are going to be worse off. So unless the poorest constituents of Bass are driving new BMW's and drinking Krug, it's hard to see what Andy's belting on about. Unless he's telling a great big fib.

You can see more of the Liberal Party shenanigans here. I'm particularly fond of;

(Winner of prestigious Arseholes of Australia award) Senator Abetz immediately tried to suspend standing orders after the opposition lost the vote.

"That handshake between the leader of the government and the leader of the Australian Greens says it all about the betrayal and the sell out of traditional Australian Labor Party values to the Australian Greens," the Liberal senator said.

"They have sold their political soul and their policy souls."
To the Devil! The Devil! SAAAAYYY-TAAAAAANNN!!!  Or something.

Government leader Cris Evans dismissed the opposition's attempts to delay the Senate Clerk from reading the title of the clean energy bills.

"We have one more puerile student politician act from the opposition," he said.
And;

"You will wear your betrayal of the Australian people like a crown of thorns," Senator Brandis thundered.

Call me crazy, but when you're labelling the Government Judas, it's probably not clever to use Jesus imagery. Crown of thorns?  Can this guy hear the way he speaks?

The following also gave me the serious confusions for a bit;

Nationals senator John Williams said it was a clear clear message to the two independent MPs.

'And the message is simple - if you vote for this carbon tax the people will have their say at the next election.

'These seats do not belong to the politicians, they belong to the people.'

Which is funny coming from a National, whose party's support is spiralling down the shitter for ignoring their constituents in favour of continuing on their tired marriage to the Libs all these years.

This one was the absolute prize for me though;

The Nationals' Ron Boswell called Independent Tony Windsor's support for the bill "the greatest sell-out since Judas Iscariot took 30 pieces of silver".
And lo, do I say to this Parliament, that before this night is through, one of you shall betray me. Oh seriously, just get fucked. I mean I could get all sorts of artsy historical here, and say that the apocryphal Gospel of Judas tends to indicate that Jesus thought Judas was actually his truest and most loyal follower, but I shall comfortably settle for saying 'oh just get fucked'.

Mind you, the following was a nice runner-up for me;

Country Liberal Party Senator Nigel Scullion said democracy had "faltered".
Which makes sense when a vote passes by a majority I guess. Still, even if you refer to the government's statement that they weren't going to introduce a carbon tax before the election, it's no greater a betrayal than, say this;

John Howard was re-elected leader of the Liberal party in 1995, and pledged "never, ever" to introduce the GST. (Wikipedia)
Which gang of pricks eventually introduced that? Hmm, it escapes me now.

Tony said some stuff too, but honestly when he talks these days all I hear is 'faaaaarrrt'. It was probably along the lines of 'blah blah betrayal, blah blah repeal bill, blah blah please make me PM it's all I really give a shit about'.

No, if we wanted to attack the Government's environmental credentials, all you need to do is look here. It's that simple. The real fight won't be the passage of this bill, it's the fight to get something serious done with our environment, stop treating it like it will be here forever, and stop the tanty throwers of the world peddling lies as truth and hypocrisy as virtue.
